Mr. Five by Five es una popular canción del año 1942 compuesta por Don Raye y Gene DePaul cuya letra describe a un hombre muy corpulento “cinco pies de alto por cinco pies de ancho” (1,52 m de alto por 1,52 de ancho). Ese hombre de la canción existía y no era otro que Jimmy Rushing, apodado como Mr. Five by Five, y que fue el vocalista de la Count Basies’s Orchestra desde 1935 hasta 1948.
La canción fue presentada en dos películas del año 1942 de la Universal Pictures: Behind the Eight Ball y Who Done It?
Ella Mae Morse con Freddie Slack y su Orquesta grabaron ese mismo año la canción que sería nº 1 en las listas del Harlem Hit Parade durante dos semanas, aunque no consecutivas. También aparecería entre los 10 más vendidos en la lista Variety’s de diciembre de 1942.
