“Why Don’t You Do Right?” (Originalmente grabada como ” Weed Smoker’s Dream “) es una canción escrita por Joseph “Kansas Joe” McCoy en 1936.
En 1936, The Harlem Hamfats grabó ” The Weed Smoker’s Dream “. McCoy, miembro de la banda, reescribiría más tarde la canción, refinando la composición y letra. La nueva canción, titulada “Why Don’t You Do Right?” y fue grabada por Lil Green en 1941, junto a William “Big Bill” Broonzy tocando la guitarra. La grabación fue uno de los primeros hits del jazz y el blues.
La canción tiene sus raíces en la música blues y originalmente trataba de un fumador de marihuana recordando sus oportunidades financieras perdidas. En su nueva versión, adquiere la perspectiva de la parte femenina de una pareja, que castiga a su hombre por sus maneras irresponsables y le exhorta a cambiar y hacer las cosas bien.
Una de las versiones más conocidas de la canción está interpretada por Peggy Lee y se grabó el 27 de julio de 1942, en Nueva York con Benny Goodman. Esta versión suena en la banda sonora de la película “Stage Door Canteen”, y terminó vendiendo más de 1 millón de copias.
Una gran variedad de músicos han grabado “Why Don’t You Do Right?” en los últimos años. Entre ellos Ella Fitzgerald (“Jazz at the Philharmonic, the Ella Fitzgerald Set”) y Joe Pass, Julie London, Cal Tjader y María Stallings, Mark Murphy, Shirley Horn, Johnny Otis, Mel Torme, Rasputina, Imelda May, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ashlee Simpson, Sinéad O’Connor, Eden Brent en su álbum “Mississippi Number One” (2008), White Ghost Shivers y Carolina Chocolate Drops en su disco “Genuine Negro Jig” (2010).
La canción fue interpretada en la película de 1988 ¿Quién engañó a Roger Rabbit? por el personaje animado Jessica Rabbit. Aunque Kathleen Turner prestaba su voz al personaje, la interpretación de la canción es de la actriz Amy Irving, entonces la esposa del productor ejecutivo Steven Spielberg. Hugh Laurie, más conocido por su papel como actor, especialmente como el doctor House, incluyó la canción, con su título y letra originales, en su segundo álbum, “Didn’t it Rain” de2013. Y por último, Gramophonedzie, hizo un remix de la versión de Peggy Lee en su single de 2010 “Why Don’t You?” alcanzando el número uno en la UK Dance Chart.
